Boxcount Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 11, 2026

Summary

Boxcount keeps your board game collection in your own iCloud account. There are no accounts, no analytics, no advertising, and no tracking. To identify games, the app looks them up with a few online services, described below. We never receive your name, email, or Apple Account.

Your collection

Your games, ratings, wishlist, locations, loans, play sessions (including the player names, scores, notes and photos you enter) are stored on your device and synced between your own devices through Apple’s iCloud, in your private iCloud database. We have no access to it.

Looking up games

  • BoardGameGeek. When you search, or after the app reads a title from a photo, the search text or game ID is sent to BoardGameGeek to fetch game details and cover art.
  • Barcode lookups. When you scan a barcode, the barcode number is looked up on our Boxcount server, and if needed with GameUPC and UPCitemdb. No personal information is sent with it.
  • Shared barcode database. When you add a game (and if you use “Sync Games to Server” in Settings), the app sends the game’s BoardGameGeek ID and barcode to our server, along with a random identifier created when the app was installed. This builds a shared database that helps everyone’s barcode scans find the right game, and the barcode-to-game links are also shared with GameUPC’s public database. The random identifier is not connected to your name, Apple Account, or device, and we do not use it to build a profile of you.
  • Shelf scanning (optional). If you use “Scan Shelf” and agree to the prompt, the photo is sent through our server to Anthropic’s Claude AI service to read the game titles on your shelf. The photo is not stored by us. Anthropic handles it under its own terms and privacy policy. If you decline, titles are read on your device instead.

Camera and photos

The camera is used to scan barcodes and photograph game boxes or shelves. Photos you choose from your library can be attached to a game or play session. Only shelf-scan photos ever leave your device, and only as described above.

Server logs

Like any web service, our server keeps technical logs that can include IP addresses and request times. We use them only to run the service and prevent abuse.

What we do not do

  • We do not use analytics or crash-reporting services.
  • We do not show advertising or use advertising identifiers.
  • We do not track you across apps or websites.
  • We do not sell personal information.

Children

Boxcount does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children.

Deleting your data

Deleting the app removes the data on your device. Your synced collection can be removed in your device’s iCloud settings. Barcode-to-game contributions are not linked to you, so they stay in the shared database.
