Dog-Ear plays audiobooks and reads epubs from your own library, and remembers where you left off on every device. It’s for iPhone and iPad.
Dog-Ear doesn’t sell or supply books. You bring your own: from a server you run, a shared folder, or files sent straight to your iPhone or iPad.
Getting started
- Just looking? Tap Try the Sample Library on the Home screen for a few public-domain classics (LibriVox audiobooks and Project Gutenberg ebooks).
- Connect a server. Settings > Libraries > Add Library. Choose Dog-Ear Library for a web folder of books with a
library.jsonindex, or WebDAV for Nextcloud, Synology, QNAP and similar shares. Logins are stored in your device’s Keychain. - Send files from a computer. Settings > On This iPhone > Wi-Fi Transfer, then open the address it shows in a browser on the same network and drop books on the page. You can also import from the Files app.
Common questions
Which formats work? Audiobooks in MP3, M4B, M4A, AAC, FLAC, OGG, Opus and WAV, and ebooks in EPUB. Chapters embedded in audio files are shown. DRM-protected books (for example from the Kindle or Apple Books stores) can’t be opened.
Does my place sync between devices? Yes, through your own iCloud account, when you’re signed in to iCloud on each device.
Can I listen or read offline? Yes. Open a book and tap the download button next to each format. Downloads are listed (and can be deleted) in Settings > Storage.
How do I set up a library on my own server? Put your books in a web-served folder and run the free dogear-index script to create the library.json
index and covers. Any static web host works; HTTPS is required outside your home network.
An epub and an audiobook of the same title show up as one book. That’s on purpose: Dog-Ear pairs formats by title and author, so you can read and listen to the same book.
